Halfling

Halflings are widely regarded as the most civilized race in Illunis. They claim that early in their history they turned away from the “primitive belief systems” they once followed. Now halflings are masters of learning and philosophy. They have established a system of government they call “democracy” in which the people gather together to choose their leaders. These gatherings generally take the form of debates, wherein the candidates are given some logical or moral quandary to discuss. The winners are more commonly those who present the best arguments, rather than those who might be better suited to the position being vied for.

Halflings tout the power of language as the greatest force of movement and change in the world. It is only by language, after all, that we are able to learn anything from those who came before us. Through their philosophical arts, halflings have discovered the power of symbols inherent in language. And they’ve learned to use words as symbols to affect changes in the world around them. In this linguistic magic, names are the most potent symbols; if you know a person’s name, you can gain power over them. Thus, when asked for his name, a halfling will respond “Call me Tolbert” rather than giving his true name. Even in immediate families, true names are rarely known by more than the halfling’s parents.
